Acupuncture in Pregnancy and Childbirth

Posted by Elements of Balance on Jun 27, 2009 in Acupuncture

preg-2 Pregnancy is an amazing time in a woman’s life. Many women report feeling healthier than they have ever felt before; however, the physical growth of the baby and changes in hormone levels can bring about pain, discomfort and a variety of health problems.Planning for a Healthy Baby Healthy parents produce healthy babies. With acupuncture and Oriental medicine, parents can improve their health to create the most optimal environment for their unborn child. In addition to their ability to strengthen, support, and balance overall health and well-being, acupuncture and Oriental medicine are an effective treatment for regulating menstruation and hormone levels, reducing stress and addressing any pre-existing medical conditions or concerns that a woman may have.Acupuncture during Pregnancy Acupuncture and Oriental medicine can play a vital role in the comfort of a pregnant woman. There is strong evidence to support that acupuncture is highly effective at treating some of the most common problems experienced during pregnancy including morning sickness, heartburn, insomnia, water retention and sciatica.

Acupuncture and Oriental medicine can provide a safe, effective alternative for many of the health complications that may arise before, during and after pregnancy. A growing number of women are choosing acupuncture to use throughout their pregnancy and as an optional treatment for an overdue or difficult labor.

Here is a list of some of the problems that an acupuncturist often treats during pregnancy:

  • Nausea and Vomiting
  • Heartburn
  • Constipation
  • Hemorrhoids
  • Edema and Swelling
  • Urinary Tract Infection
  • Pelvic Pain
  • Neck and Back Pain
  • Sciatica
  • Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
  • Leg Cramps
  • Fatigue and Exhaustion
  • Insomnia
  • Anxiety and Depression

pregnant12 Acupuncture for Childbirth While there are acupuncture points that can provide natural pain relief during labor, acupuncture is more commonly used to induce labor. There are several points that stimulate contractions and influence cervical ripening. There is also an acupuncture point that has been found to turn a breech baby.Acupuncture Postpartum Many women feel depleted after the birth experience. Acupuncture and Oriental medicine can help the transition of those first few months after birth to ensure a quick recovery. Postpartum care focuses on the physical, emotional and psychological recovery of the mother from the effects of pregnancy and labor, as well as encouraging breast feeding.

Here are some of the postpartum disorders that can be treated with acupuncture:

  • Fatigue
  • Postpartum Depression
  • Mastitis
  • Insufficient or Excessive Lactation
  • Post Operative Healing
  • Night Sweats

Safety of Acupuncture During Pregnancy

Acupuncture is safe to use while you are pregnant; however, there are some points that can cause contractions and should NOT be needled during pregnancy or should be used with extreme caution.

There are also many herbal remedies that are contraindicated during pregnancy. Always err on the side of caution with all herbs and medications while you are expecting.

Study: Acupuncture Point, UB 67, for Turning a Breech Baby

An acupuncture point on the small toe of the foot (Urinary Bladder 67) has been found to effectively revolve fetuses in breech presentation.

In an Italian study, 240 women at 33-35 weeks of gestation carrying a fetus in breech presentation were randomized to receive acupuncture plus m oxibustion (an herb used to apply heat to an acupuncture point) or to be assigned to the observation group. At delivery, the proportion of babies that had turned from breech position to vertex (head-down) position was 53.6 % in the group treated with acupuncture while the proportion of babies that had turned from breech position to vertex position in the observation group was 36.7%.

Body pH and What it Means to Your Health

Posted by Elements of Balance on Jun 27, 2009 in Acupuncture

Life is all about balance. This universal truth is especially profound when speaking of body pH levels. Body pH is the human body’s need to stay at a certain pH level. Levels of pH are measured on a scale from zero to 14, in which zero is very acidic, 7 is neutral, and 14 is very alkaline. The pH of blood in the human body must remain at a slightly alkaline level of 7.35-7.45. In addition to maintaining blood pH, some of your body’s other fluids are maintained at different pH levels to keep you healthy. To sustain these pH levels throughout your body, your cells and organs are constantly working and filtering what you eat.

Many scientists believe that helping your body balance its pH levels is very important to fighting disease. What can you do to help your body pH remain at healthy levels? Body pH levels and diet appear to be closely linked. In addition, your kidneys are probably the hardest working organs when it comes to body pH balance, so giving your kidneys the minerals they need to maintain body pH, such as calcium, magnesium, and potassium, is a good start.

How Diet Affects Body pH

The various foods and beverages you consume release either alkaline or acidic residues into your body when your body digests them. As these residues are released into your body, your body attempts to filter the residues out and maintain proper body pH balance. So if, for example, you eat a lot of acid producing foods like meat, cheese, and sweets, your kidneys would pull minerals from your body like potassium, magnesium, calcium, and sodium to counteract the acid and keep your body pH in check.

By being careful about food pH and consuming foods that are more in-line with your slightly alkaline body pH, you can ease the strain on your kidneys and lessen the need for your body to surrender important minerals in the name of maintaining body pH. Examples of alkaline-producing foods are fresh vegetables, some fruits, nuts, and legumes.

Omega 3 Essential Fatty Acids Can Help Neck and Back Pain

Posted by Elements of Balance on Jun 27, 2009 in Acupuncture

If you are a patient of mine, you probably know that I am a VERY BIG proponent of Omega 3 Essential Fatty Acids. Not only because research has shown its effectiveness in treating neurological disorders, but also because of its natural anti-inflammatory properties that aid in pain relief, tissue healing, and overall improved health!

In the April 2006 issue of Surgical Neurology [Volume 65: 326-331], researchers found that supplementing with Omega 3 Essential Fatty Acids reduced neck and back pain. "The use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) is a well-established effective therapy for both acute and chronic nonspecific neck and back pain," write Joseph Charles Maroon, MD, and Jeffrey W. Bost, PAC, from the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center in Pennsylvania. "Extreme complications, including gastric ulcers, bleeding, myocardial infarction, and even deaths, are associated with their use. An alternative treatment with fewer side effects that also reduces the inflammatory response and thereby reduces pain is believed to be omega-3 essential fatty acids (EFAs) found in fish oil."

LOOK AT THESE STATISTICS FROM THE STUDY!!!
59% of patients discontinued their daily intake of prescription NSAIDs,
60% reported improvement in overall pain,
60% reported improvement in joint pain, and
80% were satisfied with their level of improvement during the research study. There were no significant adverse effects reported, and
88% stated they would continue to take the fish oil supplements after the completion of the research study!!!
